A Good Reading Run

August 2, 2011

My July eased by with a few good reads for company – hope you’ve enjoyed the same! Sometimes it takes long quiet days to catch up with books that have been on the shelf for a while. If these are still un-read on your shelf or haven’t yet crossed your radar I can recommend each one as a memorable way to pass a summer afternoon. Let us know what you’ve been reading this summer …
For a vicarious trip to Amazonia and a mysterious community …
A trip to the Maritimes – poignant and beautifully written.
Captivating history of Manhattan and environs – so readable!
I put off reading this due to the sad topic of the Holocaust but this story is special and shares a multi-generational perspective. The movie is to be released soon starring Kristin Scot Thomas. Watch the trailer below …

Followed your recommendation to read The High Road (Fallis) and LOVED it – so was delighted to read the follow up – Best Laid Plans – where he teases the reader at the end by hinting that this story has not ended yet…
But as much as I chuckled and hooted through those books, nothing could compare to the laughs I enjoyed (and others were forced to listen to) from reading Tina Fey’s Bossypants. I know it isn’t going to pass CBC’s Canada Reads muster but oh what a fun summer read it is – not to mention a book that could turn a Tina Fey fan into a potential Tina Fey stalker. (I’m just sayin’….)

I’ll second the recommendations for Sarah’s Key (but don’t forget the kleenex) and Best Laid Plans (his other book is next up on my bedside table). I also just finished Caleb’s Crossing (another fantastic Susan suggestion), Glass Castle and then what would summer be without a solid trashy beachy novel – J’adore New York.

Picked up a copy of The Help and finished it to realize it was coming out as a movie. Could’ve just gone to see the movie and saved myself the trouble? Nah, that wouldn’t be as much fun!
